griechischer Mythos: Symbol des Todes, Sohn der Nyx (Nacht) und Bruder des Hypnos. Nachdem Sisyphos ihn in seine Gewalt gebracht hatte, konnte niemand mehr sterben, bis Ares den Thanatos befreite. - Im offiziellen Kult spielte Thanatos (außer in Sparta) nur eine geringe Rolle. - Auf der Lade des Kypselos sollen Thanatos und Hypnos in den Armen der Nyx dargestellt gewesen sein. Auf einer weißgrundigen attischen Lekythos des Thanatosmalers (um 450 v. Chr.) tragen sie einen Toten fort, auf einem Relief vom Artemision von Ephesos tritt Thanatos in Gestalt des Eros auf.
